The Telangana government has approved ₹4,051 crore to modernise Hyderabad’s electricity distribution system by replacing overhead power lines with an underground network across key urban zones.
The decision follows a recent cabinet approval aimed at eliminating decades-old overhead wiring in Greater Hyderabad. According to a government order issued by Energy Principal Secretary Navin Mittal, the project will be executed in the Banjara Hills, Secunderabad, Hyderabad Central, and Hyderabad South circles. The order notes, “To improve the quality and reliability of power supply, TGSPDCL conceptualised the programme for undergrounding the existing distribution network… This will attract industries and other investments into the metro zone.”
The initiative includes converting all 33 kV, 11 kV and LT lines along major roads into underground cables, while LT lines in narrow lanes will be shifted to AB cables, with single-trench installations adopted where possible. In addition, the government has cleared the phased procurement of 3,000 MW of solar power by 2027 to strengthen the grid, expand renewable capacity, and advance carbon-reduction goals.
