Chennai Metrowater is set to provide piped drinking water to approximately 1.2 lakh residents in the western suburbs, including village panchayats such as Moulivakkam, Iyyapanthangal, and Paraniputhur. Tenders have been floated for the construction of a 10-km pipeline connecting these areas to the 530 million litres per day (MLD) Chembarambakkam water treatment plant.
According to Sivakumar, Superintending Engineer at Metrowater, "Around 136 MLD will be delivered through the new pipeline network. The project is scheduled for completion by October 2025." The network will utilize a 1,200-mm diameter pipeline, laid along Poonamallee High Road.
These panchayats have already implemented household tap connections under the central government's Jal Jeevan Mission, which ensures a minimum of 55 litres of water per person per day. At present, residents largely depend on borewells, tankers, and other local freshwater sources. The new scheme addresses the urgent need for a consistent and reliable daily water supply.
The initiative is also expected to extend to nearby localities such as Kolapakkam and Gerugambakkam, located near the Chennai airport.
