Tamil Nadu Powers Up: Udangudi’s 660 MW Unit 1 Goes Live

Udangudi Supercritical Thermal Power Plant (USTPP) in Thoothukudi district, Tamil Nadu, has officially brought its 660 MW Unit 1 into commercial electricity generation.

Reaching the commercial operations declaration (COD) benchmark on September 5, 2026, the milestone strengthens the state's installed generation capacity. Tamil Nadu Power Generation Corporation (TNPGCL) officials highlighted the achievement as a critical step forward for the facility. By employing supercritical technology, the plant operates under advanced temperature and pressure parameters compared to older coal-fired units, resulting in higher fuel efficiency and reduced emissions per megawatt-hour.

The integration of this capacity is projected to bolster regional grid stability and provide reliable baseload power to support Tamil Nadu's long-term energy demands.
