Bharat 28: India’s First Indigenous Bullet Train Is Almost Ready to Roll!

India’s high-speed rail ambitions have hit a major milestone with the ongoing squeeze test of the first coach of the B28 (Bharat 28)—the country's first indigenous bullet train. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw personally witnessed the vehicle body shell test at BEML’s manufacturing facility in Bengaluru.

The squeeze test evaluates the car body’s structural integrity against intense external pressure and forces to guarantee optimal passenger safety. BEML is currently building the first two eight-coach trainsets, engineered to operate at a maximum speed of 249 km/h and reach a test speed of 275 km/h. Trial runs on the 100-km Surat–Vapi stretch of the Mumbai–Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail corridor are scheduled for Q1 FY2027–28.
