Srinagar Airport Clips Flight Hours for Major Runway Upgrade

Flight operations at Srinagar Airport will be restricted to between 8 am and 5 pm starting April 6, as the Indian Air Force undertakes a major runway upgradation project. The work is expected to continue through the summer months and may extend into autumn, potentially affecting travel and tourist inflow to the Valley.

Despite the curtailed schedule, the airport plans to handle over 30 flights daily within the limited time window, with the possibility of increasing operations to 34 flights depending on peak summer demand. Officials noted that such runway upgrades are routine and typically carried out every 10 to 15 years to maintain operational safety and efficiency.

Authorities have clarified that there are currently no plans for a complete shutdown of the airport during October–November for the upgrade. Once completed, the improved runway surface is expected to enhance overall flight operations and safety standards.

However, stakeholders in the tourism sector have raised concerns about the impact of reduced flight frequency and the absence of early morning and late evening services. During peak tourist periods—such as May 2024, when the airport handled over 100 flights in a single day—the higher connectivity played a crucial role in supporting tourism. The sector had already faced setbacks following the Pahalgam attack in April 2025.

Industry representatives warn that fewer flights could lead to higher airfares and inconvenience for travellers, potentially discouraging both leisure tourists and business visitors, including those traveling for short corporate engagements—an important segment of the local tourism economy.
