Skyline Transit: Shimla's ₹1,735-Crore Vision Moves Ahead

The Himachal Pradesh government has received Stage-I environmental clearance for a ₹1,734.70-crore ropeway and rapid transport system in Shimla, marking a key milestone in the state’s push for sustainable urban mobility.

Announced by Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri on 15 October, the 13.79 km-long project is designed to ease traffic congestion, reduce carbon emissions, and provide a clean, efficient transit option for both residents and tourists. The clearance, granted under the Forest (Conservation) Act, 1980, permits the use of 6.1909 hectares of forest land, subject to full compliance with environmental and legal norms.

The Deputy CM expressed gratitude to the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change for its support and reaffirmed that all construction activities would strictly follow forest department guidelines.

Once operational, the ropeway is expected to transform commuting in Shimla, while advancing the state’s goals for sustainable and eco-friendly urban development.
