On 28 September 2025, Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy inaugurated six sewage treatment plants (STPs), including a major facility at Amberpet, as part of the government’s mission to achieve 100% sewage treatment coverage in Hyderabad.
In addition, the Chief Minister laid the foundation stone for 39 new STPs with a combined treatment capacity of 972 million litres per day (MLD). These plants will be constructed in towns and villages located within the Outer Ring Road (ORR) region.
Currently, the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB) oversees water supply and sewage management across an area of 1,450 sq. km, maintaining a sewerage network of 10,753 km. Of the 20 STPs planned earlier (totaling 1,106 MLD), two were completed in November 2023 and 15 were commissioned after December 2023.
With the latest additions, the number of STPs under the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) will rise to 45 by October 2025, with a total treatment capacity of 1,878 MLD.
Further, under the AMRUT 2.0 scheme, the 39 new STPs—costing ₹3,849.10 crore—are expected to meet the city’s sewage treatment needs through 2036.
