₹162.54 Cr Boost: Munneru-Paleru Canal to Transform Telangana Water

The Telangana government has sanctioned ₹162.54 crore for the construction of the Munneru-Paleru Link Canal, a key infrastructure project aimed at diverting excess floodwater from the Munneru River to the Paleru Reservoir.

A formal government order has been issued, marking a major milestone in efforts to enhance the state’s water resource management for agricultural and domestic needs. According to Revenue Minister Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy, the canal will divert approximately 10 TMC (thousand million cubic feet) of floodwater. This initiative is expected to stabilize irrigation across 2.54 lakh acres of farmland, including 1.30 lakh acres within the Paleru constituency.

Beyond irrigation, the canal will serve as a dependable drinking water source for the districts of Suryapet, Mahabubabad, and Khammam. It will also support irrigation for ten local tanks in the Dornakal constituency, further strengthening regional water security.

By effectively harnessing surplus floodwaters, the project aims to improve agricultural productivity, ensure consistent drinking water supply, and uplift rural livelihoods across the region.
