Rising in the North: Kochuveli’s ₹439-Crore Transformation Strategy

Thiruvananthapuram North Railway Station (Kochuveli) is preparing for a major rise in passenger traffic as railway operations are gradually shifted from Thiruvananthapuram Central Railway Station, which is currently undergoing a ₹439-crore redevelopment under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme.

With renovation work progressing at the central station, railway authorities have initiated infrastructure upgrades at Kochuveli to handle the anticipated increase in passenger movement.

As part of the first phase of improvements, the station will get dormitory facilities featuring separate halls for men and women, equipped with fixed beds and operating round the clock at affordable rates. The facilities are expected to benefit families and solo travellers waiting for connecting train services.

Railway officials are also planning additional food courts at the station to supplement the existing limited canteen facilities and cater to a growing number of long-distance passengers.

Connectivity to Kochuveli has remained a long-standing concern for commuters, with passengers currently dependent on limited bus services and restricted availability of taxis and autorickshaws, particularly during late-night and early-morning hours. Officials said discussions are underway with the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation to enhance bus frequency and improve last-mile connectivity to and from the station.

Security infrastructure is also being strengthened ahead of the expected surge in footfall. Plans include installing additional CCTV cameras and increasing the deployment of Railway Protection Force personnel across the station premises.

Despite the ongoing upgrades, passengers and rail activists have highlighted several persistent issues, including inadequate parking space, congestion on approach roads and insufficient waiting areas. They warned that these shortcomings could impact the station’s ability to manage passenger traffic on a scale comparable to Thiruvananthapuram Central.

Railway sources indicated that more train services are likely to be progressively diverted to Kochuveli as redevelopment work at the central station intensifies, potentially turning it into one of Kerala’s busiest railway hubs during the transition period. Officials said the renovation and expansion works are being carried out with passenger safety as a priority.
