Water Resources Minister Nimmala Ramanaidu announced that 299 out of 517 irrigation tanks under the Handri-Neeva project command area have been filled with Krishna water, providing much-needed relief to the drought-affected Rayalaseema region.
Speaking at a review meeting in Kurnool, the Minister commended officials for timely completion of the main canal works and directed that water flow be ensured all the way to Kuppam. He highlighted that under the current TDP-led NDA government, headed by Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, the state has achieved 87.86% reservoir storage—844 TMC of the total 961 TMC capacity.
The ₹3,850 crore Handri-Neeva project spans 738 km, channeling Krishna river water across Rayalaseema. Of the 517 irrigation tanks, 174 are fully filled, 125 partially filled, and the remaining are expected to be completed by February. Local officials have been tasked with overseeing water distribution.
In Phase II, the project will extend water supply to Hindupur, Madakasira, and Penugonda. The Chief Minister has also set a vision to transform Rayalaseema into ‘Ratanala Seema’ (Land of Jewels), with plans to carry water up to the Tirupati Kalyani Dam, further strengthening the region’s irrigation infrastructure.
