Purple Line Bids Open: IIM-Calcutta Expansion Underway!

The Purple Line Metro corridor is set to extend to IIM-Calcutta, with Rail Vikas Nigam Ltd. (RVNL) initiating construction soon. This 1.7 km extension from Joka to IIM-Calcutta, proposed a year ago, has now entered the bidding phase.

Upon completion, the corridor will span 18 km from IIM-Joka to Eden Gardens. RVNL plans to construct a viaduct and an elevated station approximately 100 meters beyond the IIM-Calcutta campus along DH Road. The institute is located about 20 km from Howrah Station, 18 km from Sealdah, and 35 km from the airport.

Initially planned as a 14.1 km route between Joka and Esplanade, the Purple Line will now integrate with the upcoming Esplanade Metro hub. Officials have confirmed that IIM-Joka station will be designed for future expansions, pending feasibility and funding.

With approval from the Railway Ministry, RVNL has been directed to invite tenders for construction. The northern extension will stretch 1.6 km beyond Esplanade to Eden Gardens, forming an 18 km corridor with 14 stations. This expansion will enhance connectivity for IIM-Calcutta and nearby areas, while airport travelers will be able to reach the campus via the Airport-Noapara line, transferring at Esplanade to the Purple Line.
