The spread of Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) has accelerated the urgency of the water purification project in the merged areas.
Both the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and the state government are now allocating funds to address the situation. A total of Rs 500 crore will be invested in building the necessary infrastructure to tackle the water pollution issue around Khadakwasla. The state government has committed Rs 250 crore, while PMC will match this with its own contribution of Rs 250 crore.
Currently, residents in areas like Kirkatwadi, Nandoshi, and Khadakwasla are not receiving drinking water from the Corporation’s purification facilities. As a result, there is a need to allow private RO plants, which provide water that meets the required standards, to operate. Under Chapter 14, Rule 18 of the Maharashtra Municipal Corporation Act, the Corporation is responsible for maintaining or managing any private water sources, such as streams, lakes, or wells, used for drinking water purposes.
Despite efforts like the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM), residents have yet to see any relief. Now, they are urging authorities to take immediate action and begin water purification in these areas.
