Powering Up: PowerGrid’s 2,000 MWh Storage Win

PowerGrid has secured a contract to develop a 2,000 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) in Andhra Pradesh, marking its entry into grid-scale energy storage development in the state.

Awarded through the tariff-based competitive bidding framework, the project will be configured with a capacity of 1,000 MW and a two-hour storage duration, enabling flexible, on-demand power dispatch. A key element of the project includes the establishment of a 150 MW/300 MWh standalone BESS at the 400/220 kV Kalikiri substation in Chittoor district.

The facility will be developed under the build-own-operate (BOO) model and supported by viability gap funding (VGF) from the Power System Development Fund. Designed to enhance grid reliability and operational flexibility, the project will facilitate greater integration of renewable energy sources and strengthen overall grid stability.
