The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the establishment of the International Potato Center’s South Asia Regional Centre (CSARC) at Singna, Agra, Uttar Pradesh. Led by the Department of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare, the initiative aims to enhance food and nutrition security, boost farmers' incomes, and generate employment through innovations in potato and sweetpotato farming.
The CSARC will focus on developing and promoting high-yielding, nutrient-rich, and climate-resilient varieties of potato and sweetpotato. It will also advance technologies in post-harvest management and value addition, supporting sustainable agricultural growth across South Asia.
The potato sector in India holds significant potential for employment generation across the value chain—including production, processing, packaging, logistics, and marketing. The centre will play a key role in unlocking this potential through science-driven innovation and climate-resilient practices.
This move reflects the government’s broader commitment to agricultural modernization, nutritional enhancement, and regional cooperation.
