Off Track: Over 600 Highway Projects Miss Initial Deadlines

Over half of India’s ongoing national highway projects are running behind schedule. Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari informed the Rajya Sabha that 629 out of 1,191 active projects have missed their initial deadlines and remain incomplete.

In response to rising safety concerns, high-accident stretches have been designated as "black corridors" for targeted intervention. To streamline traffic flow and boost safety, the government is rolling out an Advanced Traffic Management System (ATMS) across roughly 52,647 km of major highways and expressways. Powered by a unified software platform, the initiative will feature centralized command centres to optimize traffic monitoring, emergency response, and network-wide enforcement.
