India has launched its first mega shipbuilding cluster in Tamil Nadu with the establishment of a special purpose vehicle (SPV), the National Shipbuilding & Heavy Industries Park, Tamil Nadu (NSHIP, TN).
The joint venture between the VO Chidambaram Port Authority and the State Industries Promotion Corporation of Tamil Nadu (SIPCOT) will develop a greenfield shipbuilding hub in Thoothukudi. The initiative follows the Union Cabinet-approved Shipbuilding Development Scheme, which has allocated ₹19,989 crore for the project. The cluster will feature a two-kilometre waterfront and a 2,000-acre landside area, with 1,000 acres dedicated to shipyards and the remaining 1,000 acres for ancillary industries and support facilities.
The project aims to enhance India’s commercial shipbuilding capabilities, stimulate industrial growth, and create large-scale employment opportunities. It is expected to play a key role in establishing a self-reliant and robust maritime ecosystem in the country.
