Greenlight for NH 544: Angamaly–Aroor 8-Lane Bypass Approved

The Central Government has approved the proposed Angamaly–Aroor bypass along National Highway 544, with a fresh land acquisition notification expected to be issued soon, according to Congress MP Benny Behanan.

Sharing the update on social media, Behanan said the project, originally planned as the Angamaly–Kundannoor bypass, has been realigned to connect Angamaly and Aroor over a stretch of approximately 50 kilometres.

The proposed bypass will be developed as a 70-metre-wide corridor, featuring an eight-lane highway in the initial phase and provisions for future expansion to ten lanes.

Behanan stated that the project had faced delays in the past due to setbacks in land acquisition, which resulted in the earlier traffic survey becoming outdated. A fresh traffic study has since been completed, supporting the renewed land acquisition process.

The updated assessment recommends an eight-lane highway with scope for expansion, replacing the earlier six-lane proposal that was based on traffic data collected five years ago.

Describing the bypass as a key infrastructure project for reducing traffic congestion in Kerala, Behanan said he had consistently pursued the matter with the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways and raised it in Parliament. He added that these efforts contributed to securing the Centre’s approval for the project.
