New STPs & Dharavi Model: A Fresh Start for the Nag River

In a major push to combat pollution in the Nag River, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Union Minister Nitin Gadkari have instructed Nagpur authorities to accelerate the construction of two sewage treatment plants (STPs) at VNIT and Panjabrao Deshmukh Krishi Vidyapeeth (PDKV).

During a review meeting on the Nag River Pollution Abatement Project, CM Fadnavis proposed adopting the Dharavi model—known for its compact, high-efficiency sewage treatment systems—for both plants. “The STPs should be space-efficient yet high-capacity, like those in Mumbai’s Dharavi,” he stated.

Supporting the initiative, Minister Gadkari urged Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) to expedite the submission of its technical report to fast-track implementation. The primary goal of the STPs is to stop untreated sewage from entering the river, addressing a persistent public health and environmental issue.

In addition to the STP plans, the meeting also covered broader urban infrastructure needs. The Chief Minister has directed the preparation of a revised Detailed Project Report (DPR) that aligns with Nagpur’s evolving urban growth.
