Nagpur, selected under the Centre’s Smart Cities Mission in 2016, is nearing the completion of its urban transformation agenda, with seven projects still pending. Initially scheduled for completion by June 2021, the project timeline has been extended multiple times, with the final deadline now set for December 31, 2025.
Out of 47 projects undertaken by the Nagpur Smart and Sustainable City Development Corporation Ltd (NSSCDCL), 39 have been completed and are in the process of being handed over to the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC).
The Smart Cities initiative in Nagpur has been supported by ₹741.63 crore in central funding, ₹400 crore from the state government, and ₹124 crore from the central Smart Cities fund. Key components include the ₹524 crore Smart and Safe City Project—featuring 17 integrated solutions such as CCTV surveillance, traffic management, and a command-and-control centre—and the ₹741.62 crore area-based development plan targeting 1,743 acres in East Nagpur.
Six ongoing projects, mostly related to road infrastructure, are currently under execution. One rehabilitation project has stalled due to land acquisition issues. As part of the ongoing operations, NMC will pay ₹25 crore annually to KELTRON for the maintenance of the city-wide CCTV system, confirmed Additional Commissioner Vasumana Pant.
