Nagpur's Power Play: Torrent's ₹3,110 Crore Bid to Energize the City

Torrent Power Ltd (TPL) has submitted a comprehensive proposal to acquire a power distribution licence for Nagpur city and adjoining rural areas, committing an investment of ₹3,110 crore over five years.

The proposal outlines a plan to modernise distribution infrastructure, ensure reliable power supply, and offer tariffs 5–7% lower than those of the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company (MSEDCL). The coverage area includes key urban zones such as Civil Lines, Congress Nagar, Gandhibaugh, and Mahal, as well as rural regions like MIDC, Mouda, and Umred.

TPL has pledged to serve all consumer categories—including low-consumption residential users—under the Universal Service Obligation. Currently, Nagpur’s peak power demand exceeds 1,000 MW, with residential users making up 86% of the consumer base. However, commercial and industrial users account for over 50% of total power consumption. Demand is projected to rise by 25% over five years, increasing annual energy sales from 33 million units to 1,280 million units.

Infrastructure plans include a fully underground power network in urban areas and a hybrid system—30% underground, 70% overhead—in rural zones. The proposal also features smart metering, SCADA-based automation, and GIS-enabled monitoring to enhance network efficiency and transparency.
