Nagpur Flyover Demolition Delayed: Railway Clearance Awaited

The demolition of the decades-old Pachpaoli flyover—an essential step in building a new, extended elevated corridor in Nagpur—has hit a major roadblock. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has paused work on the section of the flyover that spans two railway tracks, awaiting mandatory clearance from railway authorities.

This demolition is part of the broader Indora to Dighori infrastructure project, which aims to ease traffic congestion by constructing two new flyovers. The first flyover, replacing the existing 1.5-kilometer Pachpaoli structure, will extend from Kamal Square to beyond Reshimbagh Square, cutting through several high-traffic zones. The second flyover, spanning 2.2 kilometers, will run from before Bhande Plot Square to past Dighori Square.

Demolition work began last month, with a targeted completion timeline of one month. However, that schedule has been disrupted due to the need for rail blockages to safely dismantle the portion over the tracks. A senior NHAI official confirmed that the railway authorities have requested a detailed plan, which has been submitted. Until the necessary approval is granted, work on that section remains on hold. Additionally, the segment from the Golibar Chowk side is being retained temporarily to allow access for demolition equipment.

The delay is expected to push the overall timeline back by one to two months. Despite this, NHAI has moved ahead with piling work for the new flyover piers in areas where demolition has been completed. The agency is also managing debris disposal alongside ongoing construction activity.

NHAI remains optimistic about completing the Kamal Square to Reshimbagh stretch by December 2025—six months ahead of the official deadline. Still, intermittent hurdles continue to affect project momentum.

Local residents, eager for relief from daily traffic snarls, are concerned about the delay. Once completed, the new flyover is expected to significantly cut travel time between North and South Nagpur. Two Road Under Bridges (RUBs) are also planned at existing level crossings in the Pachpaoli area, though their construction will only begin after the flyover is completed.
