Mysuru's Concrete Future: A ₹393 Crore Road Makeover

The Karnataka government has approved a ₹393 crore project to upgrade 12 major arterial roads within Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) limits from asphalt to concrete, aiming to improve road durability and reduce recurring maintenance issues.

Spearheaded by the Public Works Department (PWD) under the State Urban Development Department, the project responds to long-standing public demand for longer-lasting roads. Frequent excavation for utilities—such as cables, water pipelines, and underground drainage—had left many roads riddled with potholes, prompting the shift to concrete "white-topping."

The 46-km project will cover key roads including JLB Road, Hunsur Road, Bogadi Road, KRS Road, Irwin Road, Mahadevapura Road, Mysuru–Mananthavady Road, Vishwamanava Double Road, and the stretch from Vani Vilas College to Mall of Mysuru via Mysuru Zoo.

In addition to road concretisation, the project includes the development of footpaths, medians, upgraded underground drainage systems, and a 200-meter buffer zone on either side of the roads for future utility works.

PWD Executive Engineer Padmanabha stated that tenders will be finalized after the Dasara festivities, with construction set to begin post-October 2. Once contracts are awarded, the work is expected to be completed within two months. The upgraded roads are designed to last at least 20 years without requiring further excavation.
