Mumbai's New Water Heart: Tansa Pipeline Project Complete!

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has completed the replacement of a 2,750-mm-diameter pipeline that supplies water from the Tansa Dam to the Bhandup Water Treatment Plant (WTP).

The work—part of BMC’s broader initiative to modernise Mumbai’s aging water infrastructure—was completed in approximately 28 hours, from Monday to Tuesday. The pipeline upgrade is expected to enhance water reliability and consistency across 17 administrative wards. BMC has been systematically replacing old pipelines, some more than 70 years old, to reduce losses, prevent contamination, and minimise service disruptions.

Meanwhile, Thane city is facing a significant water cut following damage to a 1,000-mm-diameter pipeline that transports water from the Pise Weir to the Temghar WTP. The line was damaged on December 6 during work carried out by Mahanagar Gas. As repairs are underway, the Thane Municipal Corporation has imposed a 30% water cut, with restoration expected to take an additional three days.
