Moving Mumbai: The Mahalaxmi Travelator Skywalk

Mumbai’s public transport network is nearing a major upgrade as construction on India’s first multimodal travelator-equipped skywalk hits the 90% completion mark. Spearheaded by the MMRDA, the 283-meter-long, 11-meter-wide elevated pedestrian corridor will seamlessly link three major transit hubs: Sant Gadge Maharaj Chowk Monorail station, Mahalaxmi Metro station (Aqua Line), and Mahalaxmi Western Railway station.

Designed to handle up to 4,500 commuters per hour, the facility features six travelators spanning 176 meters, along with two passenger lifts for improved accessibility. By eliminating the need to navigate heavy street traffic or multiple staircases, the skywalk will cut transit transfer times by nearly 20 minutes, offering a smoother, integrated commute across the city.
