In a major relief for more than 700 plot allottees in Mohali’s Sector 90, the Punjab Forest Department has approved a land swap that clears a long-standing hurdle to the area’s development.
The proposal involves exchanging 23 acres of forest land with an equivalent parcel in Mattewara village, Ludhiana. After receiving clearance from the Greater Ludhiana Area Development Authority (GLADA) in September, the plan now awaits final approval from the Union Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF).
GMADA Chief Administrator Sakshi Sawhney said, “We are hopeful of receiving approval soon, as the matter will be decided by the ministry’s regional office in Chandigarh.” Development work is expected to begin immediately once clearance is issued. Progress in the sector had been stalled for years because 23 acres of the acquired land were protected under the Punjab Land Preservation Act (PLPA).
