Modernizing Kollam: Inside the Rs 361-Crore Rail Makeover

The Rs 361-crore redevelopment of Kollam railway station is progressing steadily, with key infrastructure works including the service building, multi-level car parking facility and parcel building already completed. Construction is currently under way on a 12-metre-wide foot overbridge, an air concourse, new northern and southern terminal buildings, and platform upgrades. The air concourse will function as an elevated transit corridor linking the two terminal buildings and providing seamless passenger access to platforms. In addition, 11 railway overbridge (ROB) projects worth around Rs 390 crore are at various stages of planning and execution across the Kollam Lok Sabha constituency. The Rs 37.24-crore Kundara-Pallimukku ROB has received approval and is in the land acquisition phase, while the widening of ROB No. 2134 on the Edamon-Punalur railway line is progressing under the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). The Ministry has also highlighted an increased railway infrastructure allocation of Rs 3,795 crore for Kerala in 2026-27, with project execution subject to land acquisition and statutory clearances.
