Mizoram on Track: Aizawl Connected to National Rail Network!

Indian Railways has successfully completed the 51.38-km Bairabi–Sairang railway line, linking Aizawl, the capital of Mizoram, to the national railway network—a vision first conceived in 1999.

The project faced significant challenges in its early stages, including dense forests, rugged terrain, and limited construction windows due to prolonged monsoons. Declared a National Project in 2008–09, it moved through multiple phases of detailed surveys and planning. Reconnaissance and geo-technical studies conducted by the Northeast Frontier Railway and RITES between 2003 and 2011 laid the groundwork for construction.

Land acquisition was completed by 2014–15, and the foundation stone was laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in November 2014. Active construction began in 2015–16, progressing steadily despite difficult conditions.

In June 2025, the project received final approval from the Commissioner of Railway Safety and is now set to be officially inaugurated by Prime Minister Modi. This strategic railway link is poised to improve regional connectivity, drive economic development, and strengthen Mizoram’s integration with the rest of India.
