As part of ongoing efforts to rejuvenate the Gomti River, Jal Nigam (Rural) plans to set up four new sewage treatment plants (STPs) with a combined treatment capacity of 342 million litres per day (MLD).
The proposed STPs will intercept sewage from several major drains in Lucknow—including Nagariya, Sarkata, Basant Kunj, Wazirganj, Jiamau, and Mastemau—which currently discharge untreated wastewater directly into the Gomti River. The projects aim to divert and treat this sewage before it enters the river, thereby reducing pollution levels. One of the key facilities will be a 145 MLD STP designed to treat sewage from the Nagariya and Sarkata drains.
Detailed project reports (DPRs) for the four STPs, with an estimated total cost of approximately ₹671 crore, have been submitted to the National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG). Upon completion of land allocation, the projects will receive central funding under the Namami Gange programme.
At present, Lucknow operates six major STPs with a combined treatment capacity of 584 MLD.
