The Ministry of Jal Shakti has released ₹1,561.53 crore to five states under Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) 2.0 for the financial year 2025–26, following their compliance with reform-linked conditions and agreements.
Uttar Pradesh received the highest allocation of ₹792.93 crore, followed by Chhattisgarh (₹536.53 crore), Madhya Pradesh (₹154.02 crore), Odisha (₹65.31 crore), and Maharashtra (₹12.74 crore). The funds were disbursed after these states signed reform-based memorandums of understanding and committed to improving rural water supply systems.
Under JJM 2.0, the focus has shifted from infrastructure creation to ensuring reliable and sustainable piped drinking water services. States are expected to enhance service delivery standards, promote sustainability, and encourage community participation in managing water systems. A structured validation process has also been introduced to ensure transparency and accountability, requiring states to meet financial, technical, and data-related benchmarks before receiving funds.
So far, 12 states have signed agreements under the mission, which has an increased total outlay of ₹8.69 lakh crore, reflecting the government’s stronger push for rural water security. Earlier, on March 13, Union Jal Shakti Minister C. R. Patil reviewed progress with state ministers and officials, emphasizing timely project completion and stronger ground-level monitoring for effective implementation.
