The Union government has constituted an interministerial committee to design the National Manufacturing Mission—an ambitious initiative aimed at substantially boosting the manufacturing sector’s contribution to India’s GDP.
Chaired by BVR Subrahmanyam, CEO of NITI Aayog, the committee is currently holding consultations with state governments and industry stakeholders to shape the framework of the mission.
First announced in the Union Budget 2025, the National Manufacturing Mission seeks to increase the manufacturing share of GDP from the current 16–17 percent. It will serve as a key driver of the Centre’s ‘Make in India’ initiative, supporting industries of all scales—from micro and small enterprises to large corporations.
The mission will focus on enhancing product quality, streamlining regulatory processes, developing a future-ready workforce, and strengthening the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) sector.
A strong emphasis will be placed on clean technology and domestic value addition. The mission aims to establish a robust ecosystem for manufacturing components such as solar PV cells, EV batteries, motors, wind turbines, and other green technologies.
The committee's recommendations are expected to result in concrete policy frameworks and incentive mechanisms to support industrial growth across regions and sectors. The government views this initiative as a foundational step toward long-term economic transformation.
