The Central Government has expressed its full support for Kerala’s proposed Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS), contingent on the submission of a Detailed Project Report (DPR), Union Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs Manohar Lal Khattar announced at the Kerala Urban Conclave in Kochi.
Minister Khattar confirmed that Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan had brought the project to his attention, adding that Kerala's track record—demonstrated by the success of the Kochi Metro and Water Metro—shows strong potential in modern urban transit.
“The Kochi Metro expansion is progressing smoothly, thanks to the collaborative efforts of the Centre and the state,” he noted.
Highlighting India’s overall progress in urban mobility, Khattar stated, “With 1,065 km of operational metro lines, India ranks third globally after China and the USA—and is poised to surpass the USA within the next 2–3 years.”
