Kaza Scores Big: ₹82 Crore Sports Boost for Himachal's Tribal Belt

In a significant move to promote sports and regional development in Himachal Pradesh’s tribal belt, Union Minister Kiren Rijiju laid the foundation stone on 29 June 2025 for a series of major sports infrastructure projects worth ₹82 crore in Kaza, Lahaul-Spiti. The initiative includes the construction of a High-Altitude Sports Training Centre, an ice hockey rink, and a cricket ground pavilion—marking a transformative step for youth and athletics in the region.

Funded under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Vikas Karyakram (PMJVK), these projects align with the central government’s broader Viksit Bharat (Developed India) vision. The facilities are expected to empower local youth, promote winter sports like ice hockey, generate employment opportunities, and position Kaza as a future sports tourism destination.

The foundation ceremony saw the presence of key dignitaries, including Mandi MP Kangana Ranaut, Lahaul-Spiti MLA Anuradha Rana, former MLA Ravi Thakur, and senior officials. Minister Rijiju highlighted the dedication of Joint Secretary Ram Singh, a local officer who played a crucial role in drafting and advancing the proposal, reaffirming the Centre’s strong commitment to the development of tribal and border regions.
