Karnataka's Nuclear Leap: New Kaiga Units to Power Up the State

Karnataka is set to significantly enhance its power supply, with nearly 50% of its allocated share expected from the upcoming Units 5 and 6 at the Kaiga Nuclear Power Station (KNPS) in Uttara Kannada.

According to Umed Yadav, Head Corporate Commissioner at NPCIL, while the final allocation will be determined by the Union Ministry of Power, Karnataka is likely to receive a major share of the power generated. Currently, the state draws 35% of its electricity from the four operational KNPS units, each with a capacity of 220 MW.

The two new 700 MW pressurised heavy water reactors are scheduled to be commissioned by 2030, contributing to the southern grid, which Karnataka shares with neighbouring states.

Site Director Vinod Kumar B confirmed that all environmental clearances from the Ministry of Environment and Forests have been obtained, and stringent safety protocols are in place. Excavation work is complete, and construction is slated to begin post-monsoon.

The turbine package has been awarded to BHEL, while the nuclear island package will be executed by Megha Engineering and Infrastructure Ltd, marking a key milestone in the state’s long-term energy planning.
