Karnataka’s 500MW Ambition: Charging the Future of AI

MB Patil has announced plans to develop artificial intelligence (AI) data centre clusters of varying capacities across Karnataka to accelerate growth in the Electronics System Design and Manufacturing (ESDM) sector, with Dakshina Kannada identified as a key location.

Chairing meetings of the ESDM and Core Manufacturing Vision Groups at Khanija Bhavan, the Minister said the initiative is aimed at ensuring sustained industrial expansion in the state. He outlined a three-tier strategy for data centre development, noting that the government intends to foster a supportive ecosystem for establishing hyperscale data centres with capacities exceeding 500 MW.

In addition, facilities with capacities between 20 MW and 200 MW are proposed for tier-2 and tier-3 cities to encourage balanced regional development. The government is also working to attract investments to support these projects, he added.

Mr. Patil further said the state’s coastal belt is being considered for development as a 500 MW AI data hub. Officials have been instructed to conduct a feasibility study for setting up a cable landing station in Mangaluru to strengthen digital connectivity and support the proposed data centre ecosystem.
