JSW Steel Forges Ahead in Odisha: Secures 2,950 Acres for Mega Green Steel Plant

JSW Utkal Steel (JUSL), a fully-owned subsidiary of JSW Steel, has successfully secured a substantial land parcel spanning 2,950.31 acres to establish a state-of-the-art greenfield integrated steel plant (ISP) with a capacity of 13.2 million tonnes in Odisha.

This extensive land acquisition comprises 2,677.80 acres of forest land, with possession transfer documentation already completed and delivered to JSW Utkal Steel. Additionally, the Odisha government has already leased 272.51 acres of non-forest land to the company. The strategically located land parcel is in close proximity to the Paradip port in Odisha.

In 2022, JSW Steel unveiled its ambitious plans to invest Rs 65,000 crore in a phased manner for the establishment of a cutting-edge steel plant in Odisha. Notably, the company already possesses significant iron-ore reserves in the state.

It is worth mentioning that the allocated land was initially earmarked for the Korean conglomerate Posco, which intended to develop a 12-million-tonne-per-annum (MTPA) steel plant. Unfortunately, the project faced setbacks, including local protests related to land acquisition and other challenges, leading to its eventual discontinuation.
