JSW Neo Energy, a subsidiary of JSW Energy, has signed a long-term Pumped Hydro Storage Power Procurement Agreement (PHSPPA) with Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Limited (UPPCL) for the supply of 1,500 MW / 12,000 MWh of pumped hydro energy storage.
The 40-year agreement includes a fixed capacity charge of Rs 77.2 lakh per MW per year. The project will be located in Sonbhadra district, Uttar Pradesh, and is designed to deliver up to eight hours of scheduled energy discharge daily, with a maximum of six continuous hours. Commissioning is expected within six years.
With this deal, JSW Neo Energy's total committed energy storage capacity rises to 28.3 GWh, including 26.4 GWh from pumped storage projects. The company is on track to meet its strategic target of 40 GWh of energy storage capacity by 2030. This agreement highlights the increasing role of pumped hydro storage in supporting grid stability, managing peak demand, and integrating renewable energy.
