Jharkhand Plans Green Makeover for Closed Coal Mines

Jharkhand has identified two closed coal mines in Giridih and Ramgarh districts for a pilot redevelopment programme, aiming to turn exhausted mining sites into environmentally restored and economically productive assets.

The Giridih Open Cast Project (OCP) and Karma OCP have been selected under the Technical Cooperation on to-be-closed coal mines (TCCM) project, a joint initiative involving the Union Ministry of Coal and German development agency GIZ.

The programme will focus on scientific mine closure, environmental restoration, sustainable land-use planning and livelihood generation, with the pilot projects expected to create a framework for the future rehabilitation and repurposing of closed coal mines across Jharkhand.
