The Telangana government’s Metro Phase II is progressing steadily, with nearly 85% of land acquisition completed for the 7.5-km Green Line (Corridor-VI) connecting Mahatma Gandhi Bus Station (MGBS) to Chandrayangutta in Hyderabad’s Old City.
Of the 888 identified properties along the alignment, awards have been passed for 752 structures, while the remaining cases are being addressed, including 10 properties currently under court consideration. A senior Hyderabad Metro Rail Ltd (HMRL) official said the alignment avoids heritage structures, with due compensation being paid and construction proceeding as legal clearances are obtained.
Parallel to land acquisition, utility shifting by the waterworks, electricity, and telecom departments is underway, involving pipelines, drainage lines, power infrastructure, and cables. Demolition and relocation work has already begun from the Darulshifa stretch.
Under Phase II-B, three new corridors will be developed: Jubilee Bus Station (JBS) to Medchal (24.5 km, fully elevated), JBS to Shamirpet (22 km, mostly elevated with a 1.65-km underground section), and Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) to Future City (39.6 km, comprising elevated, at-grade, and underground sections). Together, the corridors will span about 86 km and entail an estimated investment of Rs 20,000 crore.
The Metro expansion is expected to enhance connectivity across Hyderabad’s key growth corridors, ease traffic congestion, and strengthen access to public transport.
