Guwahati’s Growth Engine: New IIM and Data Centre Take Flight

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday virtually inaugurated the temporary campus of Indian Institute of Management Guwahati and a state-of-the-art National Data Centre (NDC) for the Northeast, giving a significant push to higher education and digital infrastructure in the region.

Approved by the Centre last year, IIM Guwahati is the second Indian Institute of Management in the Northeast and the 22nd in the country. The first IIM in the region is Indian Institute of Management Shillong. The new institute is expected to expand access to quality management education and create advanced academic and research opportunities in the region.

The newly launched NDC, established at Amingaon in Kamrup district of Assam, has been developed to host mission-critical applications of multiple government departments and function as a disaster recovery centre for other national data centres. With a total sanctioned power load of 8.5 MW and an average rack capacity of 10 kW per rack, the facility is equipped to support high-density, large-scale digital operations.

During the event, the Prime Minister also flagged off 225 electric buses under the PM-eBus Sewa Scheme. Of these, 100 buses have been deployed in Guwahati, 50 each in Nagpur and Bhavnagar, and 25 in Chandigarh, reinforcing the government’s push for sustainable urban mobility.

Collectively, these initiatives underscore the government’s commitment to strengthening educational institutions, enhancing digital governance infrastructure, and promoting green transportation in the Northeast and across the country.
