Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Limited (GRSE), the Kolkata-based shipbuilding leader, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Germany's Carsten Rehder Schiffsmakler und Rehder GmbH & Co. KG for the construction of four additional 7,500 DWT multi-purpose vessels. This follows an earlier contract for eight similar vessels already under construction at GRSE’s yard.
The MoU was signed in the presence of Union Minister of Shipping, Ports and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, highlighting the strategic significance of the collaboration. The new vessels will feature hybrid propulsion systems and meet the latest cybersecurity standards, reinforcing GRSE’s commitment to sustainable and advanced maritime technologies.
In addition to the German partnership, GRSE signed MoUs with UAE-based Aries Marine LLC for the construction of offshore platforms and vessels, and with a global engine manufacturer, further diversifying its portfolio and strengthening international collaborations.
Minister Sonowal also emphasized growing bilateral maritime cooperation, especially with Norway, citing joint initiatives on green shipping corridors, decarbonization, and the India-Norway Task Force on Blue Economy as key areas of progress.
These agreements mark another step forward in GRSE’s evolution as a global shipbuilding hub, embracing innovation and eco-friendly practices.
