Galathea Bay Port: ₹1 Lakh Crore Project Hits Key Milestone.

The ₹1 lakh crore International Container Transhipment Port (ICTP) project at Galathea Bay in Great Nicobar Island has achieved a key milestone with the finalisation of its Detailed Project Report (DPR).

The project now awaits approval from the Union Shipping Ministry. Following approval, tenders are expected to be floated within six to eight months to attract private participation. To be developed under a public-private partnership (PPP) model, the first two phases will involve an investment of ₹44,000 crore. Once operational, the port will handle up to 16.2 million TEUs, primarily focusing on container traffic, and significantly reduce India’s reliance on transhipment hubs such as Colombo and Singapore.

Strategically located near major international shipping lanes, the port boasts natural depths of over 20 metres, positioning it as a potential regional transhipment hub for both Indian and global cargo movement.
