The Kerala Water Authority (KWA) has temporarily stalled its proposed Rs 200 crore water treatment plant at Aruvikkara due to a funding shortage.
To overcome this financial hurdle, the KWA is actively exploring external financing options, including potential assistance from the Asian Development Bank (ADB). Additionally, the authority has approached Nemom MLA Rajeev Chandrasekhar to help mobilize funds from the Union government. Proposed in July 2026, the project aims to add 100 million litres per day (MLD) to Thiruvananthapuram’s overall water treatment capacity. However, according to officials, the project has not yet received official administrative sanction because the necessary funds remain unsecured.
The urgency for this infrastructure expansion is driven by rapid urbanization, expanding residential townships, and economic growth, which have pushed Thiruvananthapuram’s daily water requirement beyond 400 MLD. Demand is rising particularly fast in the Kazhakkoottam and Vizhinjam regions, placing mounting pressure on the city's existing water supply network.
