Oil India’s subsidiary, Numaligarh Refinery Ltd (NRL), is developing a 200 KTPA aviation fuel plant in Odisha as part of its broader goal to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2040.
Currently in the Detailed Project Report (DPR) stage, the plant is being planned along Odisha’s coast to tap into potential export markets, although strong domestic demand is anticipated in the near term.
Speaking in Guwahati, NRL Chairman and OIL CMD Ranjit Rath noted, “2040 is the target for net zero; therefore, we are pursuing two parallel strategies — achieving net zero and creating value-added propositions.”
As part of its sustainability initiatives, NRL is also setting up a bio-refinery in Assam to produce activated carbon from bamboo dust, with technical collaboration from IIT Guwahati.
Additionally, NRL is increasing its refining capacity from 3 to 9 MMTPA, supported by a new 1,635 km crude oil pipeline linking Paradip Port to Numaligarh.
