Pinarayi Vijayan recently inaugurated the Compressed Biogas (CBG) plant set up by Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) at Brahmapuram near Kochi.
Speaking virtually at the event, the Chief Minister said Kochi has become the first city in the State to commission a CBG facility dedicated to processing biodegradable waste. He termed the project a major advancement in the scientific management of municipal biodegradable waste in Kerala.
The plant has the capacity to handle 150 tonnes of source-segregated biodegradable municipal solid waste per day. It is expected to generate 5.6 tonnes of compressed biogas along with 28 tonnes of organic manure daily.
Vijayan highlighted that the initiative represents a mutually beneficial collaboration between BPCL and the Kochi Corporation, strengthening the city’s waste management infrastructure while supporting clean energy production.
