The Odisha government has announced a comprehensive survey of urban areas facing drinking water shortages to enhance the state’s potable water system.
The Water Corporation of Odisha (WATCO) will evaluate source sustainability, treatment and storage capacities, and distribution efficiency, especially during peak summer months. The initiative aims to prioritize interventions and guide investments. Bhubaneswar’s growing water demand, currently facing a deficit of 65.5 million litres per day, will be a key focus. Presently, water is sourced from the Mahanadi, Kuakhai, and Daya rivers and supplied through six water treatment plants (WTPs) located at Mundali, Palasuni, Chandrasekharpur, Naharkanta, Bhuasuni, and the High-Level Tank systems.
A new 130 MLD WTP at Mundali is expected to be operational within six months, while an additional 20 MLD WTP at Naharkanta is slated for completion by 2028. “WATCO will ensure improved water supply to all apartments and institutions in Bhubaneswar,” an official said. The state is also exploring long-term water sourcing solutions to meet the city’s future needs.
