The decades-spanning Phina Singh irrigation project in Himachal Pradesh's Kangra district is finally nearing its final stages. Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri announced that the project received a significant financial boost with the release of ₹60.26 crore from the Central government.
Conceived in 2011 with an initial outlay of ₹204 crore, inflation and delays have pushed the revised estimate to approximately ₹643 crore. While the state government has independently invested nearly ₹300 crore, ongoing advocacy with the Ministry of Jal Shakti has unlocked fresh central backing.
Designed to interlink the Kalam nullah and the Chaki river—both tributaries of the Beas—the infrastructure relies on a 4,307-meter tunnel to channel water. Upon completion, the project will transform local agriculture by providing reliable irrigation to 4,025 hectares across 60 villages in Nurpur.
