The Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB) has granted consent to begin excavation work for Units 1 and 2 of the Mahi Banswara Rajasthan Atomic Nuclear Power Project (MBRAPP).
Developed by Anushakti Vidyut Nigam (ASHVINI)—a joint venture between the Nuclear Power Corporation of India (NPCIL) and NTPC—the project aims to build, own, and operate nuclear power plants in India. This approval follows the AERB’s earlier clearance in May 2025 for construction at the Mahi Banswara site for Units 1–4, which was transferred to ASHVINI in September 2025. Units 1 and 2 will feature 700 MWe pressurized heavy water reactors (PHWRs), using natural uranium fuel and heavy water as both coolant and moderator.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for the MBRAPP project in September 2025. Estimated at Rs 42,000 crore, the initiative represents a major step in expanding India’s nuclear power capacity and enhancing energy security.
