After nearly two decades of delays, work on the 184.45-km Nagari–Tindivanam railway line is finally progressing at full pace.
Overseen by Southern Railway’s construction wing, the project—initiated in 2008—has key sections moving toward completion. The 13-km stretch between Nagari and Podatturpettai is expected to be ready by March 2026, while the 20-km Walajah–Sholinghur segment is slated for completion by December 2026. Designed for speeds up to 130 km/h, the line is being developed in two phases: 65 km from Nagari to Walajah in Phase I, and 120 km from Walajah Road to Tindivanam in Phase II.
The new rail corridor will improve connectivity to major industrial clusters and offer alternative routes to important destinations. “With land acquisition now complete, the railways should expedite the remaining works,” said local resident S. Thamarai Kannan. The entire project is targeted for completion by March 2028.
