Erode's Water Lifeline: Corporation Takeover Underway

Amid recurring delays in pipeline repairs that have disrupted water supply for residents, the Erode Corporation has decided to take over the maintenance of sumps and pipelines from the Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage (TWAD) Board.

The ₹484.45-crore Dedicated Water Supply Scheme (DWSS), launched in 2017, currently provides 135 liters per capita per day (LPCD) to the city. Although 90 percent of the project has been completed, the Corporation continues to face frequent issues such as pipeline breakages and malfunctioning motors. A senior Corporation engineer noted that delays in addressing these problems negatively impact the civic body’s reputation.

Initially, the Corporation will assume responsibility for maintaining only the sumps and tanks, with further decisions contingent on the completion of remaining project works. To support this transition, a request for ₹8.35 crore will be made to cover operational costs and wages. Approval from the Director of Municipal Administration will be sought before issuing a tender.
