At a recent board meeting chaired by Delhi Water Minister Parvesh Verma, the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) approved a series of long-pending infrastructure projects aimed at improving water supply and sewerage services across the capital. These initiatives are expected to benefit lakhs of residents by accelerating key public utility works.
A major policy reform now allows DJB to directly execute water and sewerage projects for the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) and other land development agencies—reversing a 2019 rule that required full board approval for such works. Authority has been restored to the Chief Engineer (Planning) level, reducing bureaucratic delays. This change is expected to fast-track several stalled projects, including water supply for DDA’s low-income housing in Narela and in-situ rehabilitation at Katputli Colony near Shadipur Depot.
The board also revived the Delhi Water Supply Improvement Project in the Wazirabad Water Treatment Plant command area. Originally sanctioned under Asian Development Bank (ADB) funding in 2013, the project had stalled in 2020. With ADB recommitting its support, the project will now cover 123 sq km and is projected to benefit around 30 lakh residents.
